Laughter Yoga Classes

Yogic philosophy reminds us that we are alive because the cosmic energy from the Universe flows into our body through the breath which is the Life Energy Force or Prana. The very essence of our life is breathing. But stress, negative emotions constrict oxygen supply and induce shallow chest breathing, diaphragm is not moving anymore as breath is restricted to chest area. A normal inhalation fills just 25% of our total lung capacity. Remaining space is filled with old stale air.

The main characteristic of pranayama is that exhalation is longer than inhalation thus ridding the lungs of residual air which is then replaces by fresh air containing a higher level of oxygen. Deep breathing techniques increase oxygen to the cells. What is the best way to exhale longer? Laughter!!! Fastest way to exhale longer and flush our lungs.

Laughter stimulate the movement of the diaphragm and abdominal muscles which in turn activates the parasympathetic system (calming branch of the autonomic nervous system).

Clinical research conducted at Bangalore, India and in the United States has proved that Laughter lowers the level of stress hormones (epinephrine, cortisol, etc) in the blood. The concept of Laughter Yoga is based on a scientific fact that the body cannot differentiate between fake and real laughter. One gets the same physiological and psychological benefits. It all started in the 60s with Norman Cousins who wrote Anatomy of an illness , sharing the impact of laughter on his health. From personal experience when he was hospitalised and his visiting friends tried to help him relax, he  observed that 10 min laughter would gave him 2 hours of pain-free sleep. Eventually he healed and wrote the book. Then several doctors started to be interested (Patch Adam, famous from the movie of the Doctor dressed as a clown) until Dr. Madan Kataria embrassed it and developed a protocol which is followed across 100 countries.
